Called to Run

“When members engage in service outside of the Church and reach out to their own communities, the blessings will follow.”
President M. Russell Ballard
Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

The Church does not endorse political candidates or parties in elections nor does it advise its members how to vote. However, Church leaders and scripture alike have long advised members to be actively engaged in their communities and politics.  In the General Handbook, we are instructed that “Church members are encouraged to consider serving in elected or appointed public offices in local and national government” General Handbook 38.8.35.

The Doctrine and Covenants teaches that “we believe that governments were instituted of God for the benefit of man; and that he holds men accountable for their acts in relation to them, both in making laws and administering them, for the good and safety of society” D&C 134:1.

We have compiled some quotes from Church leaders about political and community service to serve as a starting off point as you ponder and pray about whether a run for office is right for you.
